A proposed model by which exercise enhances cognition and memory. Upregulation of DBHB synthesis enhances the inhibitory effect on HDAC2 and HDAC3, which inhibit hippocampal BDNF expression. BDNF upregulation enhances glutamate release from CA3 onto CA1 in the trisynaptic circuit. Glutamate release is linked to improvements in cognition and memory.
