A proposed model by which EPAS1 modulates oxygenation. Under hypoxic conditions, the lack of oxygen slows HIF-2a degradation, promoting erythropoiesis via HRE-mediated upregulation of EPO transcription and thus hemoglobin production, which directs oxygenation of hypoxic regions. Such a mechanism is believed to assist the achievement of homeostatic oxygenation under hypoxic conditions.
